Geek of the Month: Drake Anthony

Name: Drake Anthony

Age: 21

Marital status: Single

If single, where do you like to meet people? My classes are where I meet the most people. Plus, that's where the nerdy girls are, which are definitely my type!

Hometown? Goodfield, IL

How did you end up in Peoria? I live in Carbondale, IL right now, but I used to drive to Peoria nearly daily when I lived in central IL in order to go to my Jiu-Jitsu classes at the Peoria Athletic Club.

What makes you a geek? I specialize in creating giant death ray lasers from broken and scrap electronics parts. Plus, I am majoring in chemistry in school. I'd say that is pretty geeky!

How long have you been working with lasers?  I've been working with lasers since I was 12 years old, and I began posting videos of my creations under the YouTube name "styropyro" soon after.

How did you get started? I first learned about how lasers work in science class, and found it so amazing that I went online to learn more. Eventually I learned how to build my own powerful lasers at home, and then I was hooked in the hobby!

Favorite movie? Law Abiding Citizen

Favorite book(s)? Into the Wild

Favorite type(s) of music? Rock/Metal!

Favorite band? Alter Bridge

What is your favorite way to spend your Sunday Mornings? Sleep!

Astrological Sign:  Do you believe in horoscopes? I can't say I buy into Astrology.

What is your guilty pleasure? Procrastinating!

What is your favorite place in Peoria? The Peoria Athletic Club, an awesome place to learn the awesome art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

Do you have any pets? I don't keep pets in my apartment, but my parents keep the cats I grew up with as a child. Our oldest cat is 16 years old.

Are there any special hobbies you enjoy? Lasers is what I'm known for doing, but I also enjoy chemistry, electronics, jiu-jitsu, hiking, and raising insects.

Questions from previous Peoria Life Geek Fellows:
Who shot first – Han Solo or Greedo?
Can't say, I haven't seen the Star Wars movies.

Who is your favorite bearded person? Dmitri Mendeleev

Where do you think technology has the most potential for helping others in the future? The field of medical science is rapidly improving with continued research in the area, and I expect to see a lot of breakthroughs in treating disease in the relatively near future.

What are you excited about doing with the technology that’s coming? As my field is in lasers, I am excited to see the advancements in laser technology in the coming years. Lasers will be more integrated in the medical field, as well as be used in technology like holographic data storage and laser TV.

Who would win in a fight? Superman vs. Batman, but Batman is in a Superman costume and Superman is in a Batman costume because it’s a Halloween party?  I'm going to go with Batman in a Superman costume.

What are you doing to make Peoria into the cultural and economic hub that it once was? I will spend some of this summer working for ATET construction rebuilding some of the homes destroyed in the Washington tornado. Although it isn't Peoria directly, obviously there is a major economic link between the two communities, and I will be looking forward to help rebuilding the homes lost!

What public figure do you look up to and why? Although he is no longer living, I look up to George Washington Carver because he was a great scientist that was actually born as a slave, but was still able to become a great scientist and improve the lives of so many people.

Make up a question for yourself and future geeks columnists to answer.

What is your favorite web comic? Xkcd all the way!
