When Billy Joel said the sinners were much more fun he was right, but only because these guys hadn't come along yet. Saints of Valory, a rock/alternative/pop band out of Austin, Texas kicked off WWCT's Discovery Concert Series at the Fieldhouse in Campus Town last night. The concert series is the brainchild of Marc Alighini, program director and morning host at WWCT. His goal is two-fold; to introduce the Peoria area to new bands, in a live and extremely affordable way, through these concerts and to give back to the community by donating the admission of $1 and a non perishable food item to a local charity. The benefactor for last nights concert was Friendship House.
He could not have picked a better band to get his series started. This is an adorable, sexy, sweet and talented group of guys with a fabulous story. They are out of Austin in a "that's where they live and record now" kind of way. They are each actually from different parts of the globe. Gavin Jasper is a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and as a kid met Godfrey Thomson, who was born in California, while his parents where working in Rio. They remained friends even after Thomson's family moved. Almost twenty years later in 2008 Thomson came back to Rio bringing Labou with him and forming a three man band with Jasper. Later after rehearsing and recording in Stephen Buckle's Texas home studio this childhood friend became the fourth member of the band. After many ups and downs and changes in their band's name and music style they have arrived at the place they are today. Coming from opening for Fitz and the Tantrums and playing at Rockin Rio festival to the Fieldhouse seems like it would be a bit of a shock, but these guys played for the small crowd in Peoria with the same enthusiasm and energy that they gave for the huge crowds they'd been used to performing for.
If you didn't get out to see Saints of Valory when they were in town check them out on youtube and follow their facebook page and don't forget to check out WWCT's website and facebook page for the next band in their series which will continue on November 4.
