The St. Jude Runs, co-founded by Mike McCoy and Gene Pratt in 1982, is a relay-style event benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Runners begin their journey from St. Jude in Memphis, Tennessee, or one of 36 satellite communities, all concluding in Peoria, Illinois, home of the St. Jude Midwest Affiliate. These runners truly go the extra mile for the kids of St. Jude—with every step they take.
Because not everyone can participate in the more rigorous Memphis to Peoria Run, satellite runs were started from communities throughout Illinois and Missouri. Satellite Runs have been established from Bartonville, Bloomington/Normal, Canton, Champaign/Urbana, Chicago, Chillicothe, Decatur, Dunlap, East Peoria, Elmwood, Eureka, Galesburg, Kewanee, Kickapoo/Brimfield, LaSalle/Peru, Lewistown, Lincoln, Mackinaw, Macomb, Marshall County, Mason City, Mattoon, Metamora, Minonk, Monticello, Morton, Pekin, Princeville, Quincy, Richwoods, Running Central, Springfield, St. Louis, Tremont, and Washington. A group from each community meet the Memphis Runners in Peoria to kick off the St. Jude Telethon held at the Peoria Civic Center every year in August.
In 2010, dedicated St. Jude supports from Mobile, Alabama, started the first annual Memphis to Mobile Run. The St. Jude Runs continues to seek other cities willing to participate in this event.
Since inception, the St. Jude Runs have raised over $50.8 million for the kids of St. Jude with 37 runs participating. With 3,022 runners and volunteers, the St. Jude Runs raised $5.21 million in 2017.
