Perspective Over Test Scores

Children often surprise adults with what they can do. Unfortunately, too often, when students show disinterest in what is offered to them, adults see it as laziness. As an educator, I believe in giving students opportunities to figure out what they want to do and tailor their learning experiences towards their interests, rather than focusing solely on standardized test scores.

A perfect example of this is Taurey Best, a talented poet who surprised us all when she expressed an interest in recording rap music. Although she had no experience in a recording studio, she quickly proved that it was worth the cross-country trip to meet up with Raedar Music CEO Ray DeCambra. The resulting song, Danger, and 16 year old Taurey herself were featured on a WCBU radio podcast soon after. She then amazed us again as a video director.

At just 17 years old, Taurey directed and co-exec produced a stunning music video in Jamaica, which has yet to be released. And she didn't stop there. Just a few months later, she created another beautifully captured story. What's even more impressive is that she developed the visual themes, coordinated the staff, actors, and finances for the video, all while being shy!

Children leading in creative fields with no prior experience shouldn't be a surprising accomplishment; it should be more commonplace. We should invite students into every job category to gain perspective and experience. Innovation in education is easy when we provide these kinds of experience-building opportunities for our students.

In conclusion, let's focus on building creativity and providing opportunities for our students. Let's shift our perspective to focus on experiences over objectives. Taurey's music video for the song Hot Spot drops on all streaming platforms on April 29th, so be sure to check it out!
